Because we are local, your data is down the street not offshore in a rented server farm!
This cloud backup service lost backup data belonging to ~7,500 customers. The cause was defective RAID hardware/controllers from suppliers (Promise Technology and others) that failed to detect and recover from drive/array errors, leading to data corruption. Carbonite sued the vendors for over $3M in damages, blaming them for the "significant data loss" that harmed its reputation.
During a planned migration of its cloud backup services to Google Cloud Platform (intended to improve redundancy), human/operational error caused critical metadata servers to be decommissioned prematurely. This rendered customer backups unrecoverable or inaccessible for an unknown number of users (some reports from affected MSPs/customers described data as "permanently lost").
A configuration error led to the accidental deletion of the entire Australian pension fund’s Google Cloud environment (including backups across regions). It took ~2 weeks to restore via third-party backups; without them, the $135B fund’s data for 640,000 members would have been lost
This enterprise cloud storage provider (used by some for backups) abruptly announced shutdown with only ~2 weeks' notice before filing for bankruptcy. Customers with petabytes of data (sometimes their only copy) had to scramble to migrate everything or risk permanent loss. Partners like IBM, Rackspace, and others assisted, but the sudden closure highlighted business-failure risks unique to third-party remote services.
This cloud hosting/backup-reliant service was hacked via its AWS control panel. The attacker deleted primary data, machine configs, and all backups (including cross-region/offsite ones). The company could not recover and permanently shut down. It became a textbook example of why backups must be isolated from the primary environment.
A fire destroyed SBG2 (and damaged SBG1) in France. Many customers lost both primary data and backups because they were stored in the same facility/building (contrary to best practices). French courts later ordered OVH to pay damages to affected customers (e.g., Bluepad and Bati Courtage lost years of business data)
At Data Vault Digital, we genuinely care about our customers and their data far more than the big backup corporations ever could.
